How we Partner with the Asian Studies Academy

Asian Studies Academy at Dwight-Bellizzi School is located in the heart of the Southend of Hartford. Asian Studies Academy's mission is to provide our students with appropriate opportunities to be productive learners for life in an informational and technological age, while guiding them to become responsible citizens within an ever-changing global society.

The Asian Studies Academy, then called Bellizzi Middle School, and COMPASS established their partnership in 1999. Initially, COMPASS provided an hour-long academic tutoring piece for students at Bellizzi , and then opened its doors at 4:00pm for the community. Programs included open gym, arts and crafts, dance and computer programs. In 2002, COMPASS transitioned into the After School Initiative where we were designated the lead agency for Bellizzi Middle School by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. We provided academic support, enrichment and recreation to students in grades 6-8.

In 2007, COMPASS began a new journey into the community schools. COMPASS and Bellizzi remain working partners in this new endeavor and have begun to make strides in providing a model for successful Community Schools partnerships. We offer parent programs at night, such as ESL and financial literacy workshops, bring in additional resources for our families and students, such as The Village for Families and Children, YWCA and Trinfó Café. In 2009, we will partner with the Molar Express to provide dental education and dental services at both Dwight Elementary and Bellizzi Middle School. The joining of both schools will increase the enrollment to 550 students and include grades 3 - 8.

School Improvement Plans and Activities

The School Improvement Team consists of staff, parents, and administrators, and input is sought from all participants. The team meets once or twice a month to review, revise and update the accountability plan. The team identifies and addresses the needs of the school in areas of academic weakness by using the compatibility frameworks to bring about improvements. To improve the school’s accountability to communicate with parents, the website is updated regularly with information regarding the school’s resources and changes to enhance student education.
