Community Schools

ENRICH. EMPOWER. EXCEED.

Serving the Hartford System of Schools since 2004, COMPASS Youth Collaborative partners with Community Schools to help them in their goal of providing an innovative environment to promote learning and development.

The concept of community schools was modeled after the Children’s Aid Society, a non-profit that has served the Metropolitan New York area for more than 100 years. The philosophy behind community schools is to combine the best educational practices of a quality school with a wide range of vital in-house health and social services to ensure that children are physically, emotionally and socially prepared to learn.

ABOUT THE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM MODEL

COMPASS delivers academic, quality enrichment programming Monday – Thursday as well as recreational activities on Fridays following this model:

Academics—Homework Club allows students to begin their homework with support from certified teachers from the school as well as receive tutoring from COMPASS professional youth development workers.

Enrichment—Students are given the opportunity to choose their ideal program from offerings that allow for creativity and self-definition. Options may include art, theatre, computer research techniques, cooking, team-building, yoga, dance and so on.

Recreation—Youth engage in physical or fun activities where they’re encouraged to release mental and/or emotional pressure through sports, outdoor play, educational film-watching, games and other free play-oriented activities.

Fun Fridays—These end-of-the week activities allow for students to engage in social discussions with their peers and have been developed to build team spirit and cohesiveness. Field trips are sometimes part of this program, as are the activities described above in “Recreation.”

SUMMER PROGRAM

Complementing our school year program is our highly regarded summer program that works with the school to prevent summer learning loss and expose students to fun and innovative programs.
